Waitlist and Referral Details

First Step House primarily serves people involved in the criminal justice system, with moderate to high criminogenic risk, and a substance use disorder. We are a referral-based program and accept referrals from our community partners based on Federal Priority Placement Criteria. To be quickly placed on our waiting list, please contact one of the following entities.

  • Adult Probation and Parole
  • Assessment and Referral Services
  • Criminal Justice Services, Drug Court and Probation
  • Gail Miller Resource Center
  • Men’s Homeless Resource Center (Pamela Atkinson Homeless Resource Center)
  • Salt Lake County Justice Courts

  • Third District Court
  • US Federal Probation

Currently, we do not offer walk-in assessment or admissions though one of our admissions staff will gladly answer questions about our non-referral waitlist or assessment processes. Those not involved with any of the above entities are encouraged to visit us in-person at the address listed above. The wait time for an available bed is approximate 8-weeks.

ADMISSIONS

What to Expect

We make every effort to admit each person scheduled for admission, though at times personal circumstances or medical needs may prevent us from proceeding. Upon arrival for admission, we ask that all prospective clients arrive ready to enter treatment. During intake, our staff will guide you through our admissions process, which includes the following:

  1. An administrative process for completing all required paperwork and the creation of your client file
  2. A clinical process conducted by an Assessment Specialist that will result in your treatment recommendation, based on your individual needs and goals
  3. A urine drug screen and/or alcohol breath test, to determine any potential for withdrawal risk
  4. A Tuberculosis test
  5. Securing and documenting prescription medications
  6. Introduction to your treatment community and time to settle in

What to Bring

If possible, please be prepared with the following documentation:

  • Proof of Salt Lake County residency
  • Drivers license or other forms of identification
  • Proof of income
  • Health records
  • Information about previous treatment episodes
  • Court records and legal documents

What Not to Bring

Should you arrive with any of the items listed above, you will be kindly asked to dispose of them or have them retrieved by a loved one:

  • Weapons of any kind
  • Bagged, unbottled medications, or prescriptions (belonging to you or other people)
  • Gang, alcohol, or drug-related attire
  • Paraphernalia
  • Furniture, televisions, gaming consoles, or other household items
